The holiday has been celebrated over dozens and dozens of years and majority of Ukrainian look forward to this holy day to commemorate the resurrection of Christ and to go to the church for the Easter vigil.

Ukrainian Easter is a combination of lots of various Christian traditions. Even though the Resurrection was celebrated only from 988, the date when Kiev Rus was baptized, the ‘Velikden’(Ukrainian name of Easter) was celebrated for thousands and thousands of years.

Since Ukrainian Easter is a family holiday, as a rule, everyone gathers with their relatives, goes to church, etc. To the church, people, as a rule, bring products so that priests to bless them.

It’s a tradition, on this day, to say to people: “Christ is risen! People should reply: “Risen indeed!”

When people come back home from church, they celebrate Ukrainian Easter together, sitting at the table, talking, having holiday dinner, etc.

Easter eggs (‘Krashanka’) and Easter cake (‘Kulich’)  are two obligatory sorts of food on the table this day. Easter eggs are boiled and painted in different colors or pictures. Easter cakes are made of dough in a cylinder form.

It’s a tradition on Ukrainian Easter to exchange small gifts.

Also, during Ukrainian Easter season, people visit their deceased relatives or friends in the cemeteries. They bring food, flowers and wine.

Since Ukrainian Easter is a national holiday, people have 3 days off, the day before and the day after apart from the actual Easter Day. Banks and other public companies are closed.
