Hello.
Ukrainian traditions and the traditions of the USA have a lot in common and some of the American holidays have become a part of the Ukrainian culture as well. As you know, this Thursday the Americans will celebrate one of their main holidays: Thanksgiving Day, which is becoming one of the Ukrainian holidays too. The history of this holiday dates back to the 17th century. The legend has it that the first colonists in the USA have faced very harsh winter and more than half of these colonists have died from cold and hunger. But next year the harvest was plentiful and the colonists have even invited the Indians to their feast.
The centuries have passed but the tradition to gather around a festive table has survived. Nowadays, whole family gathers together on this day and eats traditional Thanksgiving turkey. In the USA the celebration is followed by the parade, where the people dress as Indians and the colonists from the 17th century.
Ukrainian traditions of celebrating Thanksgiving Day are not as rich and colorful as Americans. However, every year it becomes more and more popular and if you come to Ukraine http://www.ukrainianfiancee.com/tours.htm you will make sure that Ukrainian holidays became pretty similar to the American and European ones.
Thanksgiving Day is not a state holiday in Ukraine yet (however, the Ukrainian government already discusses this issue), but the Ukrainians are also willing to thank the Lord for his gifts. Actually, it has become one of the Ukrainian holidays long time ago, because Ukraine has always been an agricultural country, and people always asked the Lord for a plentiful harvest.
Also according to the Ukrainian traditions of celebrating this holiday, people do a lot of charity work. Good-natured Ukrainian ladies http://www.ukrainianfiancee.com/aboutukrladies.htm usually cook dinners and treat it to homeless people for free.
As usually Thanksgiving Day is followed by a warm family meeting. People sometimes come even from other countries to celebrate this holiday and very often it’s the only day in the year when the members of the family see each other. According to the Ukrainian traditions, the oldest member of the family invites younger generations for dinner. But as usually, the family talks it through and discusses who will accept the whole family. The celebration takes place in a cozy family atmosphere with tasty dishes and lots of fun.
